The Role of Corpus Linguistics in the Ethnography of a Closed Community: Survival Communication

Welcome to Dr Kieran Harrington & Associates.

Dyslexia is a difficulty with reading and writing that is not related to general intellectual ability.

Phonological deficit and surface dyslexia screening procedures similar to those used by psychologists, both software and pen and paper-based, can combine with ethnographic interviewing to facilitate a more holistic perspective of an individual and the design of a suitable Individual learning plan.

Intellectual ability is usually assessed using tools such as the Wechsler Test.  However, it is vital to get to know a person in all his or her facets of life - background, schooling, personality, interests, achievements, ambitions, etc., as intelligence cannot be reduced to simple intellectual abilities based on archaic value systems. It is also important to explain the basics of dyslexia in order to demystify the technical jargon that appears on reports which tend to produce such a pessimistic picture.  It is important to understand the technicalities, but the priority is the comprehension of the ‘whole’ person.
